Hey there, neighbor! Yesterday was quite a day in Abilene, with some heartfelt moments and significant achievements making the rounds. Over in Sweetwater, a touching dedication ceremony took place for a new Career and Technical Education building at Sweetwater High School, honoring former teachers Eddie Puckett and Kenneth Dudensing. It’s always special when our local educators get the recognition they deserve, and it sounds like these two had a lasting impact on many students' lives.
In some exciting news for our local university, Abilene Christian University has officially been designated as a Carnegie R2 – High Research Activity institution. This places ACU among the top 10% of research universities in the country! It’s a big deal not just for the school but for all of us in the community, as it boosts our local economy and enhances the reputation of education here in Abilene.
On the political front, Taylor County Judge Phil Crowley has announced his re-election bid for the 2026 Republican Nomination. Crowley has been serving in this role for quite some time, and it’ll be interesting to see how his campaign unfolds as we head into the election season. Meanwhile, there was some concerning news from Lueders-Avoca ISD, where an outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease has led to many absences in the district. It’s a reminder for all of us to keep an eye on our little ones and make sure they stay healthy!
Lastly, let’s not forget the community spirit shining through with some lighter news. Colorado ISD has taken a unique approach to reward perfect attendance by raffling off an SUV! That’s one way to encourage kids to come to school! Overall, it was a mix of celebration and concern in our neck of the woods, but that’s all part of the fabric of our Abilene community.
